FERTIGATION CONTINUOUS APPLICATION CALCULATOR
GOLD'n GRO, a liquid fertilizer company is using our HN55 and CP33 injectors for fertigation. Dr. John Whitney, president, had this to say about our products, "...[GOLD'n GRO] is pleased to now offer an excellent line of liquid fertilizer injectors for the Landscape Construction and Maintenance markets and also for the Nursery and Greenhouse markets. The injector units are environmentally friendly and energy efficient because they are powered by the natural flow of the irrigation water. They are reliable, efficient, extremely accurate and easy to install and use."
Fertigation is the word for the process of applying a liquid fertilizer to turf via an irrigation system (fertilizer + irrigation). There are many advantages to fertigation versus the traditional method of top dressing. While the concept has been around for some time, it has been used in agriculture and golf courses. There were two major reasons fertigation had not been used in residential and commercial properties. One problem was finding an effective, liquid fertilizer that stayed in solution and could be used on all types of plants, as well as, turf. Second, a cost effective, easy to use product was needed to inject accurate volumes of fertilizer into irrigation systems with water demand that varied over a wide range. Both of these problems have been solved.
Today there are a number of sophisticated, purpose blended liquid fertilizers on the market that make fertigation practical. When used in conjunction with our CP33 injector these fertilizers provide a superior result, without fear of burning the turf. Properly injected, liquid fertilizers have even been shown to reduce the amount of water required to keep the turf green and healthy.
Advantages claimed for fertigation include:
- Improves turf quality and color
- A stronger root system requiring less pesticides and herbicides
- Elimination of turf "burn"
- More efficient absorption into the plant with less waste
- Eliminates feast/famine cycles associated with top dressing
- Time and labor are reduced dramatically
- Eliminates fertilizer runoff caused by rain right after applying granular fertilizers
- Deposits minimal additional salts, an ongoing problem with most synthetic fertilizers
Fertigation can be done in periodic or continuous application. Continuous fertigation is the application of fertilizer in small, regular doses every time you irrigate. This method allows the plant the best opportunity to absorb and utilize the nutrients being provided. This, of course, requires the accurate application of very small volumes of fertilizer not possible with most injectors.
One of the major benefits of continuous fertigation is the potential
for water reduction. According to the International Water Management
Institute, four times as much water is used for irrigation
as is used for drinking.
CP33
The accuracy and simple operation of the CP33 makes it easy to achieve the proper coverage during continuous fertigation. Many fertilizers are "injector ready" requiring no dilution prior to injection making it even simpler. Because the CP33 is adjustable, multiple models are not needed to apply different fertilizers. The CP33 can accommodate:
- Zone flow rates from 12 GPM to 1000 GPM and above to handle
everything from drip irrigation to municipal parks and sports
fields
- Virtually any make of liquid fertilizer without dilution including micro-nutrients and thick, "lumpy" organics, such as fish hydrolysate and seaweed without clogging
- The use of compost tea without damaging the fungi present and degrading the effectiveness of the tea
- Easy adjustment of injection rate when changing fertilizers or regulating turf growth
- Wide ranges of pH
Other key features:
- Small, compact unit easily hidden, if desired
- Can be mounted vertically or horizontally
- 11" H x 8 ½" W x 10" deep
- Locate fertilizer supply up to 100' away
- Adapts to irrigation lines from 5/8"- 6"
- 2-year Warranty on motor, longest in the industry
- Rugged plastic (never rusts)
These features coupled with easy installation and maintenance equal a cost effective way to gain the benefits of fertigation. For your convenience we have provided a continuous fertigation calculator to easily determine the rate of injection needed for your irrigation system.
